Countdown to MPF: Regal Cheer Interview.

Regal Cheer released their debut album “Cans” in 2023 and it was easily one of the best records of the year. This Brighton two piece are ones to pay attention to at MPF2024. We spoke with them to find out why they like ruining gigs with shoes.

How would you introduce yourselves to a punk fan who’s not heard of you yet?

Short attention span indie/punk for drinking lagers to.

Which of your songs/releases are you most proud of, and why?

Our debut album Cans is probably what we’re most proud of. It’s been received really well and got us comparisons to some of our favourite bands like Joyce Manor and Jeff Rosenstock. It’s also allowed us to tour more and see parts of the country we’ve never seen. It’s only 17 minutes long, check it out.

Tell us a secret about your band.

Despite what our name could suggest, we hate the monarchy. We also found out after the fact that it’s also the name of a racehorse!

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Max: other than local shows in Jersey, the first “proper” show I ever went to was Leeds festival. I think the first bands I saw were Less Than Jake followed by Taking Back Sunday. Belter of a day.

Harry: My first show was Joe Lean and The Jing Jang Jong and Metronomy supporting CSS at the Brighton Dome when I was 15. Me and a mate found a school shoe on the floor and gave it to a grown up in the crowd who turned around and blind threw it on stage, hitting the singer of CSS square in the face. She stormed off, they all stormed off, the guy legged it out the venue and the gig was over after their first song. The whole crowd was chanting “who threw the shoe” and CSS haven’t been back to Brighton since I don’t think. The story even made it to the NME. Sorry CSS!

Who would be in your supergroup?

Harry: Donald Fagen, Walter Becker and Jeff Porcaro. I’d play the tambourine or something.

Max: Me and Harry, no subs bench needed.

If you were a biscuit/cookie, what would you be and why?

Oatmeal and raisin because we like to pretend to be healthy

Oasis or Blur?

Max: Neither, Suede.

Harry: Neither, Coheed and Cambria

Too much ska or too little ska?

Why do upstrokes when you can do down?

Dogs or Cats?

RC is for the Hounds.

Who’s your favorite superhero?

Harry: Spider-Man, Invincible, Quicksilver (from the xmen films not the marvel one where he’s Russian for some reason)

Max: Mark Noble.

Help us settle the age-old bread debate. What do you call a roll / cob / bap / barm / batch / muffin / other (specify)?

Max: I’d say roll or bap.

Harry: yeah, roll, bap, sometimes crusty cob because my parents are from Birmingham.

Finally, which bands are you most excited to see at MPF2024?

We’re keen to try and catch Martha, Toodles & the Hectic Pity, Tripsun, Soot Sprite and Fresh. But also very keen to stumble about and find something new!
